Couples Therapy

How did this happen?

I can’t rely on him.

She creates stories in her head

He goes somewhere. I lose my husband.

I don’t know how to love her.

When did these thoughts replace, ‘I can’t wait to get home to you’?

Relationships have rhythms and cycles.

Closeness and intimacy often come and go in committed relationships. Cycles of tension, eruption and making up can be quite stressful – managed effectively, these cycles can become more productive!

Family history, cultural background, age differences, sexual orientation/gender identity, and substance abuse issues frequently play key roles in relationships.

We will consider and address issues like these: abandonment, shame, sexuality, emotional, physical and substance abuse. And we will illuminate how criticism and control may affect the relationship along with effective solutions.

Style differences, needing space. It’s nothing personal.

We will look at differing relationship styles and expectations to produce greater respect and understanding.

Sometimes conflict and differences are addressed by learning to not personalize a partner’s individual needs for autonomy and intimacy. Some people who are more introverted need private downtime to replenish an emotional battery when its needle is on empty.

A depleted, more extroverted partner may wonder, “Where’s the party?”

Bending and not breaking. Requesting rather than complaining.

Key to relationship therapy success is embracing generosity, flexibility, and the risk of being vulnerable. We develop skills to achieve companionship and appreciation.

I have completed Level Two training in the well-known Gottman Method, based on several decades of couples’ therapy effectiveness research. Benefits include ways to produce a detailed understanding of your specific situation, along with tailored action steps that reflect real life circumstances.

Happily-ever-after requires ongoing hard work and sturdiness.

We will prioritize helping partners to be their best selves in service of each other and of the relationship.
